Essentials Only: Book Club
Is 2026 even ready for us?!
Well we’re ready for it with our first Essentials Only: Book Club, an occasional share of the “too long; didn’t read” version of something good I’m reading or recently read, so you can feel like you read it too (and reap some of the benefits), whether you choose to grab a copy or not.
Unreasonable Hospitality is one of the best books I’ve read on how to elevate your work through incredible service; clarity on what you offer and how to offer it better than the rest; and the unparalleled pleasure of giving thoughtfully, generously, authentically and with joy.
My top 3 takeaways I’m putting to good use straightaway this year?
Give people more than they expect: It’s cheaper and easier than you think. A handwritten note, a bar of small-batch fragrance free soap after hearing a client say they’re detoxing their personal care products or a zero alc bottle of “booze” during dry January goes a long way.
I talk about this during my first-ever TV segment on ATL Live.
Spiel the dish: Romance the most important benefits, characteristics, value adds, etc. succinctly — of whatever you’re putting down that you want someone to pick up. Don’t take for granted what you know to be fabulous about a thing.
More on this on this from my hotel room in Miami.
Acknowledge that your work is important and why:
Great design may not save your life (per se). But it provides comfort, dignity and pride of place, helping people feel looked after, quietly regulating the nervous system and facilitating well-being.
Have you asked yourself why your work is important lately?
Sending my love,
Leah
p.s. I like to think I channeled my inner Oprah on the TV segment I mentioned. Here’s a look behind the scenes of the newsroom.
